Registration and licensing

Look up the contractor's Home Improvement Contractor registration on Mass.gov. For structural work, such as foundations, Massachusetts may require a licensed construction supervisor.

Dig Safe

Dig Safe says no digging project is too small to notify them first. It is free, and member utilities mark their lines. Ask who places the ticket.

Permits

Driveway aprons at the street may need town DPW approval, and structural work may need a building permit. Ask who pulls permits.
